What high density actually means

Density is the weight of a cubic metre of foam, written as kg/m3. It is not the same as firmness, and it is the number that decides how long the foam lasts rather than how hard it feels. A higher density foam carries load without collapsing, holds its shape through repeated compression, and outlasts a cheaper grade several times over.

Our closed cell range covers 30 to 120 kg/m3 in both Polyethylene and Ethylene Vinyl Acetate. Anything from roughly 60 kg/m3 upwards is what most buyers are after when they ask for high density.

Grades we hold

Both materials are available across the full density range, in sheet or block, plain or coloured.

High density EVAEthylene Vinyl Acetate. Closed cell, waterproof and hard wearing. The tougher of the two, suited to matting, cases, protective linings and anything handled repeatedly.
High density PEPolyethylene. Closed cell, lighter and more economical. Suited to protective packaging, void fill and water or airtight sealing.
Colour sheetsBoth materials available in a range of colours, useful where the foam is visible in the finished product or where grades need separating on the floor.
Cut to sizeSheets, blocks, profiles and routed inserts cut to your drawing, with laminating and adhesive backing where required.

Frequently Asked Questions

What counts as high density foam?
Foam density is measured in kilograms per cubic metre. Our closed cell foam runs from 30 to 120 kg/m3, and the grades from roughly 60 kg/m3 upwards are what most buyers mean by high density. If you are unsure which figure applies to your job, send us the application and we will specify it.
Is high density the same as hard or firm?
No. Density measures how much material is packed into a cubic metre. Firmness measures how much the foam resists being squashed. A high density foam holds its shape and lasts longer, but it is not automatically harder than a lower density one.
Do you cut high density foam to size?
Yes. We cut sheets, blocks, profiles and inserts to your dimensions on our own floors in Cape Town and Durban, including laminating and adhesive backing where the job needs it.
Should I choose EVA or PE?
We supply both across the 30 to 120 kg/m3 range. EVA is the tougher and more resilient of the two and takes wear better, which suits matting, cases and repeated handling. PE is lighter and more economical, which suits protective packaging and void fill.
Do you deliver outside Cape Town and Durban?
Yes. Both branches quote and ship nationally, so you can order from either one wherever you are in South Africa.
